About

Susan Martin

I  think of myself as a re-emerging artist.

I completed part of a BFA at the University of Calgary and, in the early days of the cooperative arts movement, was a member of The Dandelion, a studio and gallery cooperative. I was in solo, group, and juried shows in Alberta during this time.

In the late 1970s, I attended Ryerson Polytechnic — as it was called then — in Toronto and graduated in photo arts in 1981. I had a show at the Ryerson Gallery and again was in various shows. I then received an Ontario Arts Council Grant to shoot Alberta landscapes.

I moved to Vancouver in late 1981. I had work in a group show of photography at Presentation House but about then, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and what followed was a long and difficult period. My ill health made it impossible to complete projects that would allow me to put my work in the public eye. It immobilized me in more ways than one.

I still take a lot of photos. My eye has continued to grow. Now I am at a point where various circumstances are enabling me to get a body of work together and to attempt to sell it.
